Nothing says summer like a fresh and zesty Gin Gin Mule cocktail. So while the sun is still shining and we are staying at home, I’m going to show you how to make the perfect Gin Gin Mule.
SURVIVING HIBERNATION
At first, this hibernation thing was bringing out the barista in me. I’ve now turned it up a notch, taken a step back to my college/bartending days, and whipped out the cocktail shaker.
Since we’ve been encouraged to stay at home, my girlfriends and I thought we’d face time over coffees. It then moved onto wine, except I would end up falling asleep if I drank more than one glass! So I decided to make cocktails. But it couldn’t be just any old cocktail; it had to be something special….cue my Gin Gin Mule.
SEEING THE WORLD THROUGH COCKTAIL GLASSES
Last year, my husband and I travelled (aka ate and drank) our way through Europe. Dinner sort of became cocktails and canapés…nothing wrong with that. While we had so many amazing cocktails (I actually made a list!), the Gin Gin Mule (s) we had in Copenhagen were outstanding! And so, I have to share my version of the Perfect Gin Gin Mule with you.
SO WHAT’S IN A GIN GIN MULE
The Perfect Gin Gin Mule cocktail contains…well, gin! Add some lime juice and mint to make it fresh and zesty and some sugar syrup for sweetness. Top it off with ginger beer for zing. It’s seriously that good! The addition of sugar syrup gives the Gin Gin Mule the perfect amount of sweetness. If you’re not sure how to make sugar syrup, I’ve linked my recipe here. It’s just a handy, simple sugar syrup, used in cocktails, cakes and cookies. Make up a batch of it and keep it in the fridge…you never know when you might need to whip up a cocktail or two!
THE MUSHY STUFF
When I make my Gin Gin Mule, I use a cocktail shaker and squish the mint leaves and lime juice together, to release the oils from the mint leaves. This squishing is called muddling and there’s actually a special stick just for it! It’s called a muddler. If you don’t have one, you could try squishing the mint with the end of a wooden spoon. Not quite the same, but it will do the trick.
Once muddled, you add the sugar syrup, gin and some ice, then shake it all up. Strain into a glass, add extra ice cubes, mint leaves and lime slices to the glass, then top with ginger beer. That’s your Gin Gin Mule. Cheers!
